DoCoMo has a strong reputation of being at the forefront of deploying
new wireless ideas and building higher-throughput wireless systems.
DoCoMo has already widely deployed 3G technology in Japan. Beyond,
DoCoMo research is looking at 4G, and concepts beyond which may eventually
be considered "5G".
One particular effort of present importance is that of IMT-Advanced.
At the heart of this effort is the use of concepts related to MIMO.
This includes not only point-to-point single user MIMO (for which DoCoMo
has demonstrated systems at 5 Gb/s), but recent and emerging new ideas such
as Multi-user MIMO and Network MIMO. The marriage of OFDM and MIMO,
"single frequency" networks, distributed antennas, base-station coordination, uplink,
downlink and broadcast modes, etc. are all relevant and important in creating
the next generation of higher performing systems. The goal is to design a flexible,
scalable, single wireless system, that is practical, cost effective for mobiles and
base-stations, and with characteristics needed for future business and service growth.
