| What's New This
Month |
Many of us started working in January 2, 2004
with a spirit of starting a new beginning. Excitement, discovery, and
focus was in the air.
January was one of the busiest months for the
Labs, generating year end reports for the last year's accomplishments
as well as setting new goals. This is a time when we are busy
planning for the next 12 months objectives. We continue to burn
the midnight oil and work long hours in research and development.
We had number of guest speakers from universities and other companies
join us this month to give fascinating talks about their fields.
Our labs are growing quickly and more new opportunities with
the company are being posted all the time. We interviewed a number
of candidates for new positions this month and continue with our
search to find the best of the best in order to grow our industry
leading team.

Imagining the
Unseen
An interview with Khosrow
Lashkari Ph.D. |
|
Soft-spoken and perceptive, Khosrow Lashkari’s early years
in Tehran sharpened his natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge.
From constructing small radios and traveling for an hour to get
to the closest library, he realized two things that have shaped
his intellectual and professional life: there is a very real world
hidden from our senses that we can tap into and manipulate, and
that information of all forms is precious.
His experience with the unseen world of radio waves developed into
a fascination for math and the real-world phenomena that abstract
equations could define and predict. This expanded into a career
focused on identifying advanced communications tools and techniques.
One of his primary roles at DoCoMo USA Labs is to use his vast experience
to identify those challenges best-suited to helping DoCoMo USA Labs
reach its goal of ubiquitous 4G communications by 2010 – a
goal which coincides squarely with his personal vision.

The Value of Communications
An interview with Xiaoning
He, Ph.D. |
Born in Beijing, Xiaoning He has been on an interesting technology
journey.
As a child, he and his neighbors had to travel to the post office
to make a telephone call; a few years later, his first computer
– in the school’s computer lab – was an early
personal computer with only 3K of memory!
Nevertheless, in that early computer experience, He discovered the
joy of programming – a passion that has never left him. Now
he’s a research engineer at DoCoMo USA Labs, focusing on sophisticated
networking and communications challenges.
The post office is with him as well: his dream is to give people
everywhere the freedom of easy-to-use, always-accessible communications.
